Spring is firmly here with summer right around the corner. If you are anything like us when it gets hot, you simply do not want to eat anything substantial let alone heat up the house by cooking it! Jen and I were discussing this on Saturday afternoon while it was so humid and we both agreed that this is perfect weather for smoothies. This of course led to recipe swapping.
Smoothies are utterly ideal for hot weather. They are cheap to gather the ingredients for … many of which are pantry staples. They are healthy and nutrient dense, filling, quick and easy to prepare, and they are endlessly customizable.
I like to use spinach as a base for mine … wait! I hear you say, spinach in a fruit smoothie? Why yes. Trust me, you cannot taste it. Whole Milk, nuts for an extra burst of protein, Flax Seed, for Omega 3’s and fiber, and Greek Yogurt. While you can use ordinary plain yoghurt, Greek yogurt will give you more protein for the same volume of yogurt. On top of this add about a cup of frozen fruit. Which type of fruit? That is entirely up to you!
When it comes to customizing this to your taste the options are endless. Jen prefers Oat Milk; I have tried Almond milk, but I did not like the taste, so I use Cow’s Milk, or Muscle Milk (extra protein). Nuts, this is for protein and fiber, so it really depends on what you prefer. I love walnuts in my smoothies, some prefer almonds, others omit the nuts altogether. The fruit … I love blueberries (frozen Wild Blueberries, they have more taste than the frozen Blueberries). Jen likes a mixture of Strawberries and Bananas. Again, it’s a matter of personal preference. I wouldn’t recommend apples, they just do not blend well, and citrus fruits may curdle the milk. Berries, Pineapple, Banana, Peaches and Mangoes are all good choices here.
Magically speaking, this is a very grounding, soothing drink, with its base of spinach and milk it is heavy in the mother energy that many of us crave
Basic Recipe
- 1.5 cups Spinach
- .5 Cups Milk
- .5 cups Greek Yogurt
- 1 ounce Nuts
- 2 Tbsp ground Flax Seed
- 1 cup Frozen Fruit
The basic energy of the smoothie I prefer is:
- Blueberries: acceptance, peace, positive protection, warding
- Milk: nurturing, family, mother love, birth, spirituality, fertility
- Spinach: fortitude, physical strength, general physical health, prosperity, money
- Yogurt: grounding, spirituality, inspiration
- Walnuts: death, fertility, rebirth, awareness, love, abundance
- Flax Seed: Money, Protection, Beauty, Psychic Powers and Healing.
Jen’s Variation would use these energies instead.
- Strawberries: love, joy, youth, perfection, righteousness, prosperity, peace
- Banana: sex, spirituality, love, money, inner child, prosperity, fun, wisdom, innocence, happiness
- Oat Milk: money, prosperity, beauty, healing, skin, heart, health, tonic
Another popular nut choice would add this:
- Almond: wisdom, prosperity, intuition, research, weddings, inspiration
