White sage (Salvia apiana) is a desert plant that predominantly grows in California. It is a sacred plant used mainly for cleansing, purifying and protection.
White Sage has been used for thousands of years by Native Americans in ceremonies to seek blessings of health and prosperity, banish spirits and encourage protection.
It is believed that the spirit of the plant contains the cleansing and protective qualities, while the chemical constituents of the plant also contain healing and cleansing properties.
The best way to benefit from the cleansing and protective qualities of White Sage is to smudge with it. The dried sage bundle is lit on one end and the smoke is moved throughout the space to be cleansed.
As the smoke moves through the room or over a surface, the smoke attaches itself to any heavy, negative energy that is within the space, object or being. As the smoke clears, the spirit of White Sage breaks up and dissipates the negative energies, transmuting it into neutral energy to be used as energetic food by the universe.
Studies have shown that the smoke of White Sage has antibacterial properties as well. Burning the dried leaves of this plant can reduce the amount of germs in a household during cold and flu season. Smudging the room of a person with a cold or the flu can help cleanse and promote faster healing.
So next time you feel a heaviness in the air, or your household is more chaotic than usual, try smudging with white sage to clear out stagnant and negative energies.
